I began publishing this newsletter, named (as is my IG account) after Orson Welles’ south of the border wartime propaganda movie, in January 2022. My ambition – more or less achieved – was to write every week about the subjects that are close to me; my adventures as a fashion illustrator over past quarter century, the artists I revere, the movie Goddesses (and Gods) I love. Familiar terrain if you know me from social media.
My aim was to get better – and quicker – at writing. My loftier aim was to instruct and delight. As with drawing the point is to refine, to hone, to strip back. What’s left has a heavy load to bear; and yet lightness is the objective. A conundrum
In October, I introduced a podcast. Not on a whim exactly, but as another challenge. My work has taken me into the orbit of so many extraordinary people, some my idols since childhood (thanks for everything, Julie Newmar), so it seemed only natural.
Karen Morgan designed the newsletter and, the limitations of the platform notwithstanding, I modestly contend that there isn’t a better looking one. Shipwreck Studio were indefatigable in helping to shape and edit the podcasts.
A year on, I am taking a sabbatical. I have two exhibitions and a third may/may not happen project in 2023. If it is to grow, the newsletter deserves attention, which I fear will be in short supply. I would hate to let it, or you, down.
So, I wanted to thank all 2000 or so subscribers. Your encouragement and support has meant the world to me. I have no doubt I will pick up the thread again. Join me then.
Onwards!
Everything was highly enjoyable to read or to listen too. Thank you David. I loved living virtually through your world and not forgetting your garden! You are still the best illustrator hands down. You can catch the essence of anyone with just a couple of lines, so here’s to your up and coming exhibitions and all the best for 2023.
Thank you for this year and I will wait for your return here. I wish you all the best for this new year and rest a lot. I will continue to enjoy you on Instagram. It is lucky for me to have discovered you and an honor to have you as a friend in this virtual world. A big hug, dear David
